Iron and manganese removal filters

Iron and manganese removal filters

High iron and manganese contents cause discolouration of water. The transparent colour of clean water turns reddish, but sediments may also be formed on surfaces in contact with water.
We offer our equipment to prevent these adverse effects. For this job we use catalytic filter material which can convert dissolved iron and manganese ions to substances insoluble in water. These compounds are easy to filter out from water. The precipitated flocks can be removed by means of backwash cycle.

According to filter material, ProMinent® has got two kinds of iron and manganese removal filters:

  • greensand (natural zeolite) filter
    and
  • Birm filter.

Greensand filter

As water passes through a bed of greensand medium, ferrous and manganous ions react with the permanganate coating on the greensand and oxidize. With oxidation, iron and manganese convert to insoluble ferric hydroxide and manganic dioxide forms. Eventually the permanganate layer on the greensand is exhausted and must be regenerated with potassium permanganate. Generally, potassium permanganate is added to the influent to continuously regenerate the greensand.

Birm filter

Birm acting as a catalyst between oxygen and soluble iron and manganese compounds, enhances the oxidation of Fe2+ to Fe3+ and Mn2+ to Mn3+, and converts them into ferric hydroxide and manganic dioxide which may easily be filtered out. Advantages of Birm include long life with relatively low attrition cost, a wide temperature performance range and extremely high removal efficiency. Birm does not require chemicals for regeneration, only periodic backwashing is required.
