Continuous chlorite monitoring in drinking water treatment

The increasing use of chlorine dioxide as disinfectant leads to necessary monitoring tasks – also for the resulting by-products. At the IFAT 2008 in Munich, ProMinent shows with its innovative online chlorite measuring station how the concentration of the undesired by-product chlorite can be measured continuously.

In combination with a chlorine dioxide monitoring, a precise metering of the disinfectant can be implemented while at the same time observing the prescribed statutory limit values.

online chlorite measuring stationThe most common methods for chlorine dioxide generation are the chlorite-acid and the chlorite-chlorine gas methods which comply with the technical regulations according to DVGW (German Technical and Scientific Association for Gas and Water). The chlorite-acid method is e.g. used in the chlorine dioxide generation and metering plants Bello Zon® CLD or CDV by ProMinent ProMaqua. As compared to chlorine disinfection, the disinfection of drinking water with chlorine dioxide does not generate any odour-intensive and above all hazardous by-products such as chloramines, trihalomethanes, chlorophenols.  Depending on the chlorine dioxide amount and the impact on the water caused by organic and inorganic substances, solely chlorite concentrations of different magnitudes are generated which have to be monitored in the course of the process.
All common methods for chlorine dioxide measurement, as e.g. photometric methods or ion chromatography, however, do not provide any continuous results and are very time-consuming and cost-intensive.
Without time- and cost-consuming sampling, sample processing and measurement, significant costs and time can be saved with the selective and continuous online measurement offered by ProMinent. Together with the evaluation and control unit DULCOMETER® D1C, a favourably priced measuring station is created with which the chlorite concentration cannot only be monitored and documented but whose control functions permit a monitoring and management of entire process controls. Specialists of the DVGW Technology Centre for Water in Dresden (TZW) and the Landeswasserversorgung Baden-Württemberg (Langenau) (water-supply company) systematically and objectively compared the measuring station with photometric methods and the ion chromatography. Based on the results, DVGW recommends monitoring the parameter chlorite by online process control.
